Statement
I’m originally from Dundee and, after many years working successfully in film & TV in London, I’ve made my home in Edinburgh and with the SGP.
As a woman from a working-class background, I know what it is to be excluded, undervalued and face inequality. As a minority female director, I’ve challenged inequality, stereotypes and injustice throughout my career.
For our city, I want to see:
- More action on antisocial behaviour and violence against women, girls and marginalised communities, alongside education that challenges gender stereotypes.
- Planning, systems and services that support residents regardless of race, class, disability, gender or sexuality, with better community infrastructure and opportunities in poorer communities.
- Citywide climate and nature strategies and funding, responding to the People’s Emergency Briefing, with clear information and action for households and businesses facing flooding and other climate emergencies.
Why me?
I’m a good listener, an enquiring mind and a natural storyteller, able to work with people from all backgrounds. I’m a dedicated member of the SGP and Women’s Network.
I’ve pitched to corporate boardrooms across the world and led crews of over 50 people. I’ve expressed my activism through award-winning films on homelessness, class and gender, and advertising on domestic abuse and for the Guardian.
As a BAFTA-nominated film director, I want to use my skills to make a real difference to the city I live in.
