The Scottish Green Party Executive has proposed removing gender-balancing mechanisms from our internal elections (after similar measures were already agreed for Holyrood candidate selections), which requires suspending two articles of the party constitution (link to their proposal). This will be voted on by SGP Council on 1st July (link to agenda).
This is opposed by the Womens' Network (link to their response) and the Association of Scottish Green Councillors (link to their response). Both are instead proposing an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) of the party, where the matter can be decided with each party member getting a vote. Given the importance of this decision, we need to ensure it is made in the most democratic way possible.
By agreeing this amendment (and the motion afterwards), Edinburgh Branch will instruct its two delegates to vote against suspending the relevant parts of the constitution, and vote in favour of calling the EGM.
