It was discussed at a Policy Week session (recording available here), where Astri of the Policy Committee advised that branch support would help ensure that it is prioritised for debate at the Autumn 2024 Conference - hence this Branch Motion.

The Policy Motion seeks to amend policy (PRD 10.1.2) that calls for a written Scottish Constitution, by asking Greens to make the case for three linked ideas:

that principles of ecological sustainability exist at a higher level than human laws, and are binding in a different and inescapable way;

that conflict between those principles and human laws leads to danger for nature and people, so where it exists human laws must be corrected; and

that effective, accessible and fair ways are needed to identify and amend or strike down laws that violate safe Earth system or 'planetary' boundaries.

The Policy Motion calls for these ideas to be articulated by declaring peace with nature within the Scottish Constitution, and for them to be put into effect by establishing a specialised constitutional court to hear and resolve public appeals against laws and practices that may violate Earth system boundaries.

The ultimate goal is to reverse the subordinate position of nature in recent centuries, and to enable the re-balancing of all laws and practices accordingly, against a vision of founding a viable successor culture by 2085. A lot of positive change is being made, and it feels like we're just getting started. Knowledge that exists among regular members can play a part in this, as well as facilitating councillors to produce video content as an immediate medium for reaching members in an accessible way. Communicating how folk can get involved and generating some momentum coming up to the local elections in 2026 will be also key. In the next bit I'll share a bit about a few of the things I've been involved in recently, but the plan for this year is to simplify my life and focus more on the Party!

What skills and experience would you bring to the role(s) you are standing for?

I have been on the committee for a year now as comms officer, and I was involved as an ordinary member for the year before that as well. I took photos for the Breakup of Britain conference in November as well. But being an officer is more than about the technical skill of producing a result, and since moving back to 2020 I've been trying to put myself out there organising things in bicycle campaigning. I’ve been elected to this role for the past three years and would like to stand again for three reasons.

Firstly, I’m motivated by Green values and want to play a part in delivering more Green elected reps and Green wins here in Edinburgh.

Secondly, there is more I’d like to do to build on and improve how we operate as a branch and engage more active members across Edinburgh.

Lastly, I enjoy working with the branch committee and Councillors – while co-convening can involve a lot of work and be challenging at times, it can also be a lot of fun to be part of this group of committed and like-minded people.

What skills and experience would you bring to the role(s) you are standing for?

I’ve been an SGP member for many years and active in a national committee or branch role for over 10 of those, so I understand how the Party functions and what's involved in running the Branch.

In my day job I’m a manager for an environmental charity, where I’ve worked for over 20 years. That role is all about team leadership, project and budget management, problem solving, collaboration and partnership working – experience and skills I can bring to this role.

I’m confident facilitating discussions, chairing meetings, running events, and generally keeping things well organised and on track. I’m also not daunted by multi-tasking or roles that involve lots of moving parts, which is essential in the co-convenor role.

Role preference

First preference role:

Co-convenor
